Project Design Engineer

If you love designing and integrating systems for super yachts, then this might just be the position for you.

A Project Designer Engineer at Ideaworks does not spend their life behind a desk. You are the design and integration face of the project and will need to attend regular design and co-ordination meetings for all your projects. The role will almost certainly involve things outside your area of expertise where you will need to liaise with specialists. These will be both internal and external. This is both a creative and technical role. You will need to demonstrate Ideaworks excellence through all aspects of the project. This means designing within Ideaworks standards, and not offering or agreeing to things outside this.

This is a specialist role which requires marine specific knowledge. You need to have a proven track record of delivering projects within the Super Yacht market. You should be familiar with the following systems and understand their installation requirements.

AV / IT, DAS, UHF / VHF, Comms, CCTV / Security, Ships interfacing, i.e. AMCS, NMEA.

You will typically work on one or two large projects at a time but at different stages as the build transitions from design to delivery and you hand over to the Project Manager for project delivery. You are expected to stay involved through to delivery and support the team in design decisions and changes.

You will need to demonstrate your expertise to deliver an experience to an Ideaworks standard. This also means being sympathetic to the other requirements, knowing when compromise is OK. Equally there will be times where you will need to fight your corner, but always in a professional manner.

The role involves:

  • Taking ownership and daily responsibility for the design and co-ordination of your projects.

  • Paying regular visits to yards and design offices

  • Managing the design deliverables and project managing and prioritising their timelines

  • Working closely with colleagues to foster a cohesive team.

  • Close interaction with client representatives, designers, technical consultants, yard technical teams, outfitters and 3rd parties.

  • Design change management & project documentation / intent upkeep: writing documentation for colleagues to follow, while being considerate of your target audience.

  • Design and creative input.

  • Identifying what’s important to the client and where we can upsell in things they see value in.

  • Documenting and communicating how we are meeting the technical specification.

  • Creating the HAT and FAT sign off protocols.

  • Assisting in the preparation of FAT systems and presenting the FAT system to the Owner’s Team or shipyard representatives.

  • Recording the intent and getting approval to avoid ambiguity.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Meticulous by nature and able to deliver exceptional results consistently whilst managing multiple deadlines simultaneously.

  • Have excellent communication skills to manage and nurture all client and/or client team relations/liaison throughout the course of each project and thereafter.

  • Good technical knowledge and interest in AV, IT and Lighting Control systems.  Continued learning and self-improvement is crucial to stay up to date with the latest technologies.

  • Ability to think fast and creatively – there will undoubtably be challenges and puzzles to solve whilst delivering each project.

  • Competence and understanding to effectively use a wide range of tools, products and approaches on a project-by-project basis.  Ability to adapt quickly is crucial.

  • Have excellent teamworking skills, especially providing suitable design instructions for colleagues to understand simply and quickly.

  • Have a backbone, not being afraid to have difficult conversations.

  • Well organised, a good planner and able to prioritise.

  • Able to see the bigger picture, and not get caught up in the detail.

  • Proactive, and ambitious, eager to learn and embrace change.

  • Humble, and readily admit where you don’t know or have made a mistake.

  • Aware of your audience and able to adapt your approach accordingly.
